Sweetness & light, although if wishing made it so. Nope, any mother knows....although it seems to be a well kept secret before you join the club ;)
After weeks of sickness in the house everyone, including me, was FINALLY on the mend... although Samwise is still coughing and hubby sounds crap, but feels well. So of course that is precisely when Frodos' name comes up on the waiting list for his Tonsillectomy/Adenoidectomy, isn't it?! We had less than a weeks notice, getting the call on Friday and the pre-admission clinic was the following Wednesday, followed by surgery bright & early the next morning!
As mums do, I tried to prepare him for what was going to happen, so he would be a little less distressed... and he did really well until I started getting geared up in my OH so sexy disposable coverall & stunning surgical hat so that I could go into theatre with him to hold his hand while he went under anesthesia. Then the wheels came off the wagon for him. It was so hard to hold it together for him, but I held his hand while trying to send all my calm through to him, and I smiled until the very moment I could tell he was out. Then the tears let loose as I walked out for them to operate on my baby boy.
Day 3 post op, I think... it's all a blurr! Fast forward several days, and THIS is what motherhood has looked like in this house... it's sitting with a sad little man who can't keep food down, and barely fluids, due to a bad reaction to anesthesia. And said little main has to be coaxed to take pain medication around the clock, despite it hurting to swallow.
And a mama snuggling up on the couch with the little man, putting a cool cloth on his forehead while sending all the healing vibes she can muster (despite not having really slept more than a few hours a night for days) and wishing I could do SOMETHING more.
Alas, it took him till the night of day 3 post op to stop throwing up... and until today, day 5, to actually be up for anything other than laying on the couch with gatorade and a blanket. He's been such a stoic little guy about the whole thing...He's pretty ok with the fact that the doctors here recommend a FULL two weeks off school due to risk of bleeding, infection, etc. So I'm hoping early next week he might be up for a quiet trip to the library for a few books to cozy up with and maybe a fancy iced chocolate at our favourite little coffee shop ... purely medicinal, of course ;)
Blessings,
Caz
